Primer
A primer on coconut-stream sheet materials
Leather alternative is a category, not a material. Before comparing suppliers, know which family each one belongs to.
Three families
- Microbial or bacterial cellulose
- Bacteria spin cellulose in a nutrient liquid. Coconut water is one such liquid, which is how a coconut stream can become a sheet. One supplier of this type sells sheets of 120 x 80 cm and sample packs.
- Fibre nonwoven with polymer coating
- Plant fibre mats finished with a polymer layer. One pineapple-leaf product is of this kind, and its maker lists a trade portal and sampling service.
- Coated textile
- A fabric base with polyurethane or PVC on top. In the trade this is what synthetic leather usually means.

Where the coconut enters
Coconut can be the liquid (coconut water for microbial cellulose), the fibre (husk), or a processing residue. Kora’s page says only that its sheet is developed from its coconut processing stream. It does not say which of these.
The finished stack decides
A sheet is rarely one substance. It can carry a reinforcement, a coating, a dye and a plasticizer. Properties and any wording about origin or end of life belong to that finished stack. A lab study of a nata de coco sheet from Indonesia used polyurethane as reinforcement and a synthetic plasticizer, which shows how a plant-derived base can still carry synthetic layers.
Third-party comparisons by a German materials library and a leather research institute concluded that no alternative they tested matched real leather on every property, though some did better on single properties. Treat alternatives as engineered materials with their own profile.
